Transit Benefits

Want to help your employees pay for their transit (bus, train) or vanpool fares with pre-tax funds and/or subsidies? Here are some ideas to get you started:

1. Check out the WMATA SmartBenefits program - a free platform for businesses to establish any combination of pre-tax and subsidized funds for their employees to apply to their SmarTrip card  and pay for transit, parking at or near transit, and vanpool fares. 

2. Already using a third party administrator (TPA) for other aspects of your employee benefits programs, like health or flexible spending? Check with your account administrator as many TPAs also offer the option to administer transportation-related benefits. 

Don't forget! If you offer a subsidy to reduce your employees' commuting costs by public/private transit or vanpooling, you may be eligible to claim 50% of the costs back (up to $100 per employee per month) through the Maryland Commuter Tax Credit!
